Follow these simple steps for home safety improvement:
*Install handrails on both sides of stairs *Provide light at the top and bottom of stairways. *Use night lights during evening hours in the bathroom, bedroom and hallways. *Install grab bars in your bath and shower stalls, as well as on the sides of the toilet. *Use a non-slip mat or safety decals in your bath or shower. *Store commonly used items on easy-to-reach shelves. *Put rug-liners, dual sided tape or non-skid backs on area rugs.
Senior Home Safety Program:
We help seniors, 60 and older remain independent and stay in their own homes. You can receive assistance with minor safety related issues. No cosmetic improvements. Qualified volunteers will provide minor home repairs and modifications. Examples of services provided: Installation of handrails and grab bars, install smoke detectors, repair loose tiles and carpet, minor repair of windows and doors. (NO plumbing or electrical). Income and other eligibility criteria apply.
LATCH (Locals Available to Contact and Hire)
Do you need assistance with housekeeping, meal preparation, personal cares (bathing, dressing, nail care), running errands, companionship, or seasonal chores? We maintain a referral list of individuals willing to provide these services. These individuals are self-employed and will discuss their fees with you directly. Background checks have been completed on these in-home workers.
Loan Closet Equipment:
What types of equipment are available? • Wheelchairs • Walkers • Canes • Shower chairs • Bath transfer Benches • Raised Toilet Seats • Commodes • Over the tub grab bars • Transfer Boards • Crutches • Reachers • Sock-aides • Temporary Ramps • Other items-we occasionally have other items available that may not appear on this list. If we do not have the item available, we will try to refer you to another resource.
Who can use the loan closet? We serve seniors age 60 or older and any adult age 18 or older with physical or developmental disabilities residing in our service areas. Individuals may need an item for the following reasons:
• A person would like to try out a piece of equipment before purchasing the equipment for themselves. • A person has a short term need for the equipment. • A person needs an item not covered by Medicare or Medical Assistance or private insurance and can not afford to purchase the needed equipment at this time.
How does the loan closet work? Call the Aging and Disability Resource Center and ask to speak with a resource specialist to see if the item you need is available. If the item is available, you can come to the Loan Closet location to pick up the item and sign the loan agreement and take the equipment home with you. Loans are for up to 6 months in duration, and there is no charge for loaning the item. Items must be returned in the same condition they were loaned out.
Donations of Equipment: Donations of equipment are also accepted as long as the items are clean and in good repair. Please call us to find out if the item you wish to donate is needed. |
